Working poor Latinos with lower levels of education and English proficiency
remain largely disconnected from the internet.

  • Just one in three Latinos who speak only Spanish go online.

  • 79% of Latinos do not have any type of internet connection at home compared to 92% of whites. Among the 29% of Latinos who do have a home internet connection, 66% have a broadband connection.

  • Latinos with lower levels of education and English proficiency remain largely disconnected from the internet

    1. 4 in 10 Latinos have not finished high school compared with 1 in 10 Whites and 2 in 10 African-Americans.
    2. 78% of Latinos who are English-proficient and 76% of bilingual Latinos use the internet, compared with 32% of Spanish-monolingual Latino adults.
    3. In 2006, 46.4% of San Francisco residents spoke a language other than English at home. Of those speaking a language other than English at home, 26% spoke Spanish.
  • The poor remain disconnected at an alarming rate. In 2006, 12% of all people in San Francisco were living in poverty. 18% of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level of $57,679. The median household rent in San Francisco is $1,174. 43% of renters in San Francisco County spent 30% or more of household income on housing.
